Sydney Weekender

Hello world!

Hope you're still with me cuz I know it's been a little while between drinks. So, you know I had an awesome but incredibly busy time in Sydney over Easter. Somehow in the space of three days we managed to:
  • pick up the ultimate nanna blanket on the way to Sydney, via a market at Exeter
  • schlep to our fave daggy Asian joint, Harry's Singapore Chilli Crab (yes, that's the ACTUAL name) and consume a 2.2 kilo mud crab between the three of us (oh man, the sweetness of the crab, with the fiery chilli sauce was so good)

  • race through the Museum of Contemporary Art, where I unfortunately missed the Anish Kapoor exhibition, but managed to eat the most delicious eggs cocotte at the MCA cafe

  • meander around the The Rocks market, where I picked up a beautiful Silk Diva Tunic  from Anna Pryor

  • scoff one of my fave dishes of all time, the roti canai, at the once hatted, yet still awesome Mamak
  • Nip into the Sydney Antiques Centre, where as someone who collects tea pots and vintage tins,  picked up the Holy Grail = a tin tea pot (what are the chances?!)

  • Dash through IKEA, because I physically do not know how to visit a city without nipping into a furniture store (oh I also went to Matt Blatt on Oxford Street). AND to top it off...
  • attend a Big Fat wedding of 500 (yep that's 50 with an extra 0)

Phew! Summing it all up, I'm not sure how we managed to do it without going insane, well we kinda did, but that's what happens when you travel with an 8 year old and my Mother.

Oh did I not mention that my Mother, who also travelled from Canberra, insisted we visit a random distant relative with her, in some unknown part of Sydney, because you know, we had so much spare time.

When picturing said Mother, think, Imelda Marcos/Margaret Thatcher/Martha Stewart/Oprah Winfrey rolled into one. So basically a scary perfectionist dictator with a penchant for shoes and a heart of gold, who always gets what she wants. Bless.

I'm hoping this weekend will be way less cray cray, but ya never know with me!

Until next time...Rose. xx

Much ado about nothing # 6

Hello world!

For those of you not living in Aus, sorry to break it to you but we've got yet another long weekend coming up. For those of us in Aus, huzzah!!!!!!!!!!!

So what have I got planned? Plenty.

The fam and I are heading to the big smoke aka Sydney for a long overdue weekend getaway. We're staying at Circular Quay, which means access to the most beautiful harbour in the world, more food than you can poke a fork at, and a trip to the promised land, IKEA. Woot!

I also plan on using my time in Sydney hunting for a collared shirt, because I’m seriously obsessed with them. I know its totes weird, but you know that feeling when you realise something's missing from your wardrobe, and if you find it, your 'style avatar' will be complete? For me it's the collared shirt.

And just in case I haven't talked enough about collared shirts, check out this sweet one at ModCloth

Also I have to report on what a fabbo weekend I had catching up with Miss E and the LSR ladies.

Hanging out with Miss E always gives me the warm and fuzzies. She is seriously one of the most 'alive' people I have ever met.

I realise, unless you're friends with Casper, most people's friends are um alive, but what I mean is Miss E doesn't just live life, she eats is up.

This is a girl, though currently on Mat Leave,  who still manages to build her own outdoor setting (yep you heard me), run a household, raise a baby, and volunteer as a marketing manager for a not-for-profit org supporting mothers with post and anti natal depression.

Seriously, what a dynamo!

Also, hanging out with the LSR ladies recently, catching the French Film Meet me in Real Life and checking out new Italian restaurant Bicicletta was another reminder of how amazeballs they all are.

The succulent lamb at Bicicletta

Though these women are all unique, what binds them together and makes me gravitate towards them, is their shared capacity for compassion, empathy, excessive laughter and incredible intelligence.

On that note, here's to the long weekend, excessive laughter, collared shirts and your circle of friends. After all, love, friends, family and um collared shirts, really do make the world (and weekends) go round. So does gravity, I think.

Oh here's a picture of a cat on a hot tin...car (aka my cat Gibi)

Until next time...Rose. xx

Puffing with pride

Hello world!

Thanks to the super kool Rachi over at le-bonvivant, I've been nominated for a Liebster Award.

To say I'm a bit puffed and chuffed would be an understatement.

What's a Liebster Award you say? Well a 'Liebster award is a blogger to blogger award, almost like a chain letter between bloggers' but waaay less annoying (quote from Rachi's blog...well you know how it is, if it ain't broke...).

Anyway, I think it's an ace gesture and one that works on the principle of paying it forward.

So here's the low down, the nominee has to answer 11 questions from their nominator, plus declare 11 random facts about themselves and then nominate bloggers with less than 200 followers to win the award. Plus you gotta thank your nominator by linking back to their page (well that's just good manners!) and let your nominees know on their page.

So first here's my nominees and questions:

Much ado about nothing #3

Hello world!

Welcome to 2013! I hope you all rang in the New Year with fun, frivolity and panache!

My NYE celebrations included a quick trip to the city to watch the 'family' fireworks (at 9:00 pm) and then safely tucking myself in bed, to watch Kylie Minogue ring in the New Year by setting off the giant fireworks in Sydney, on the telly, and then promptly falling asleep. So, seriously rock n roll stuff.

Anyhoo, now that we're well and truly in 2013, I plan to set the agenda early and repeat weekends like the one I just had.

Yesterday I caught up with my fave Laughing Ladies: Teak, JJ, and Miss A for a spot of lunch at Mocan (pronounced Mochchan) and Green Grout, aka the new Canberra hip(ster) spot (see more info on M&GG here) and then proceeded to cry me a river, watching the much anticipated screen adaptation of the musical, Les Miserables.

Firstly the food. I've been hearing about Mocan and Greet Grout for a while now, with many a Canberran hailing this joint as a truly unique establishment. The visuals of the restaurant are very beautiful, with hanging potted plants, recycled timber walls, exposed light bulbs and vases filled with fresh flowers.

The food and coffee were also outstanding, with lovely combinations of light summer flavours, like the smoked trout, asparagus and fluffed egg dish which I devoured.

My only gripe is the lack of weather control. With Canberra experiencing 38+ degree summers, the fact that the joint had no cooling arrangements, for me, really detracted from the experience. I will be back no doubt, but most likely on a much cooler day!

As for Le Mis. Well what can I say, just go watch it for Anne Hathaway alone. She is magnificent as the tragic and fragile, Fantine. The story, set against the backdrop of the continuing French Revolution speaks of many universal themes, like, redemption, love, courage and mistaken values.

The direction by Tom Hooper clearly brought out the best in many of his principle cast, including the wonderful Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. However, I agree with many film critics, in that while it is an epic story, it needn’t be as laborious and heavy handed in its messaging as it was in the film. I do however, disagree with other critics who said the songs should have been pre-recorded. I think the live singing brought an emotional depth to the scenes which pre-recordings may have missed. See the opening scene of Hugh Jackman for proof.

Overall though, I loved it for staying true to the operatic form of the musical, with almost all dialogue delivered in song. It was visually beautiful, as was Hooper's Oscar winning movie The Kings Speech. I was contemplating 3 and 1/2 out of five, but I'm going to bump it up to 4/5 for Anne Hathaway, who continues to haunt me with her Fantine. Go dream the dream!

Until next time...Rose. xx

He sells seafood by the sea shore

Hello hello!

It’s Lily here, inspired by Rose’s recent posts to provide a culinary update. To celebrate graduation, my friends and I went to the coast, with Mollymook being our chosen destination. Mother nature was not in our favour as we spent approximately 30 minutes on the beach in freezing wind which whipped sand against our legs (I never knew sand could be so vicious!). That being said, the culinary gods were definitely in our favour when we dined at Rick Stein’s at Bannisters. I had high expectations going in, given how Rick Stein is hailed in the celebrity chef/reality cooking/ABC programming world. I’m very pleased to report that my expectations were met!

Scallops with toasted hazelnuts and coriander butter, so delicious!

Lobster Raviolo. Delicious mouthfuls of soft lobster encased in  pasta

Fried snapper in a spicy chilli sauce, this dish had some punch

Fish pie, crispy on the outside, creamy deliciousness on the inside

Can never resist a creme brulee

The world really owes the person that made the first chocolate fondant

I have officially started drooling in the course of writing this post. One of my highlights of the meal was a seaweed butter which was served with the bread, I don't know how to describe it but I can still distinctly taste it on my tongue. The restaurant itself was lovely, with doors opening out to a deck by the ocean. The only let down were mosquitoes which flew in and attacked during dinner. As much as I loved the indoor/outdoor setting, being forced to put on aeroguard at the dinner table kinda detracts from the ambiance. That aside though, the food was fabulous and I would go back any day of the week!

Lily xx

Weekend wares

Hello world!

As promised it's time for weekend show and tell.

Culinary Update

As stated in my last post, last Friday Miss I, D and I headed to Rubicon for a long overdue catch up.

As you can see, the restaurant is utterly enchanting, especially the extension at the back with its' beautiful fairy lights twinkling above you as you tuck into dinner. And while the decor gave me food for thought (hello fairy lights on the roof of moi new deck) the actual food um didn't.

And again, while the service was reasonably attentive, I did feel a little intruded upon with the waiter constantly hovering over us with a jug of water that was ever so close to falling on our laps.

As for the food, given the $33 + price tag, plus general reputation of being a restaurant of fine foods, I was disappointed.

Menu highlight

My entree of red claw yabbies, with gorgonzola gratin was the highlight of menu, but the rest of my meal, along with those of Miss I and D were well... a bit bland.

On paper, the chicken with mushroom and chestnut stuffing, crisp skin barramundi with chive and potato dumplings, and wild mushroom raviolo sounded divine, but in reality the execution lacked flavour. All in all it was a nice experience but I probably won't be back again.

Onto far brighter things, I had a ripper of a Sunday, with a fabulous brunch at Ona (Manuka) and scoring two tapestries at a garage sale.

While I had planned to add to my collection of vintage tins at the antiques auction, I ended up walking away with a lovely vintage toy box for Little Rose, and the Husband found this awesome camera at my in-laws, who are also collectors.

So it was defninitely a Sunday of "Scores!!".  Anyway it's Sayonara for now. Until next time...Rose. xx

Is anybody out there?

Hello world!

I'm here, I'm here! So much has been going on that I don't even know where to begin...so I won't for now.

I've got plenty to share post this weekend, especially on the food front.

Likely total food consumption.

Last night I went to dinner with two of my oldest friends, Miss I and Miss D. Said dinner took place at a fancy pants restaurant, Rubicon in Griffith, Canberra. Review shortly.

Depending on how the day goes, I may also be indulging in tapas for the second time this week at new Canberra hip joint 'Playground'. And while the name 'Playground' might give off a slightly sleazy vibe, rest assured the decor is all crayons and hop scotch, with nary a leather sofa/animal print in sight.

Finally to top things off, Lily and I are antiques auctioning tomorrow morning, followed by brunch with my favourite people in the world,, my cousin Mr R, his Mrs S and my adorabubble nephew Mr Z.

Said brunch is to take place at Ona, thanks to recommendation from http://le-bonvivant.blogspot.com.au/search/label/coffee.

So all in all, cholesterol, here I come.

Talk soon.

xx Rose.

Malaysia Truly Asia

Hello world!

It’s Lily here back from a fantastic Malaysian adventure. I’m sorry I did not bid adieu before I left but now I’m home I’m ready to share some of my wonderful experiences. My trip to Malaysia was the result of a hasty decision made by my good friend Miss G and I, after we found sale fares online and decided on the spot that we wanted to do a week long holiday in the middle of our semester break. Here’s to spontaneity! The holiday was fabulous, with us spending four nights in Kuala Lampur doing all things touristy, and three nights in Langkawi doing all things beachey, pool sidey, and loungey. Here is a selection of some holiday snaps. I want to note at the outset that my pictures may be dominated by food, but a wish to indulge in delicious Malaysian cuisine was half the reason we went on holiday...and indulge we did! :)

Clockwise -fresh coconut juice, cheese and garlic naan, chilli crab (which was to die for!)

Just in case you were getting hungry here is a picture of fish nibbling at our feet

G browsing in one of the many wonderful markets in KL

Antique Tea House where we sipped authentically brewed green tea

Vegetable Roti

Chilli snapper, the deliciousness of which cannot be described

Clockwise - beautiful Langkawi as seen from our hotel, on a yacht, and atop a mountain courtesy of a ride in cable cars

Whilst I would have loved to share all of my photos, I hope these snaps give you a taste of what we did. I haven't included all the wonderful photos from the temples, mosques, museums, monuments, and palace, but I can assure you Malaysia has a rich culture which we loved exploring.

Upon my return home I couldn't stop singing the praises of my holiday to Rose, which I believe I did successfully as the sister is now planning a Malaysian holiday of her own! Until next time.

Xx, Lily

How to cook a chook...maybe

Hello world!

Remember I promised the Husbands' "famous" roast chook recipe. Well turns out He can't exactly remember said recipe. I know what you're thinking, like seriously whatta lamo excuse but sadly this is totally true.

Seems the Husband is an organic cook. Not as in he only uses organic ingredients ( which he occasionally does) but a cook who uses whatever ingredients takes his fancy and just "goes with da flow". While this all sounds very cool and hipster in theory, recording his tried and tested recipes is a pain because he never tests anything!

Anyway in order to pin point exactly why the damn chook is so delicious, I'm going to have to instigate a whole new cooking session, and watch him like a stalker while 'he goes with da flow'.

In the meantime you may wish to know Lily is hotfooting off to Malaysia for a week to overdose on Laksa and Roti.

What a tragic life she has, final semester at Uni, a job that keeps enough cash flow to buy shoes but not enough for mum and dad to kick her out (not they ever would mind you) and a sister as cool as me.

Anyway no doubt she will be updating ya'll in a weeks time. As for me, despite a serious case of horrendous hayfever I've bought a few nifty items, one of which I'd like to share:

This Napoleon Perdis Brow Pencil is awesome. For around $28 you get precision perfect brows without the chalky residue. As a retired make-up artist (meaning I did a course at our local technical school thinking I could be the next Kevin Aucoin, mmm not so much) I thoroughly recommend it.

That about it from me today, but I'll check in soon. Totes proms.

xx Rose.

Forget Me Not

Helllloo readers! Apologies a thousand times over for leaving such a long pause between posts. Remember my saying Rose and I share many similarities? Sporadic and intermittent blogging is obviously one of them. Rose mentioned in her previous post that I’ve entered my last semester of uni (yaya!) so unfortunately I’ve gotten a little caught with it. Rest assured though that I have not forgotten you. I am very much looking forward to finishing university but as I approach the end of my five years I’m starting to appreciate it a lot more. It’s dawned on me that I will no longer be able to see my friends every day, spend hours lounging in the sun, or have as many days off as I do. I am currently at uni two days this semester, which means for those whose weeks are 5 days working and 2 day weekends, my weeks are in reverse. I know, I know, it’s a hard life!

The ANU Law School. Have spent as much time on the lawns as I have in the building
The month of August saw my attending ANU’s annual law ball, which is THE event of the university’s social calendar. You may think I’m kidding but I do not jest. Picture an elaborate online ticketing system where tickets sell faster than a one direction concert, and those who miss out offer their kidney in exchange for a ticket. I’ve attended four out five balls in my years at law school, and this was one of my most enjoyable. Beautiful company, lovely food, and a chance to glam-it-up at the Great Hall in Parliament House, what’s not to enjoy? The ball also gave me a chance to break out my Azzedine Alaia pumps, purchased well over a year ago and the apple of my eye (feet). These are my favourite shoes in a prized shoe collection.

I am a regular Cruella De Vil (but not actually!)

Tiramisu cake served at Law Ball, yum!
Annnd last but not least here’s my take on The Dark Knight Rises as a reply to Rose’ last post. Are we not the best blogging, movie reviewing sisters the internet has ever seen?! Rhetorical question, don’t answer it, not even in your head. I’ll skip the plot summary as my Sis did a fabu job and go straight to the part where I say I freaking loved the movie!! Everybody enjoys a little superhero action but Christopher Nolan is a wonderful director in being able to imbue all three Batman films with a certain darkness, character development, and emotion which takes the movies well beyond your average superhero flick. The Dark Knight Rises does not disappoint, and unlike Rose I enjoyed it just as much as I did its predecessors. I also had an extremely scary nightmare featuring the villain Bane a few nights later, so trust me the thrills, spills, twists and turns are all in there!

Until next time,
Lily

Dining & Styling

Hello world,

It’s Lily again with my much awaited second post. I say much awaited as Rose literally just texted me with ‘oi when u doin your post?’ I’d like to say this was due to the magnificence of my first entry, but it’s more likely due to the fact that I should have gotten this entry up a while ago, apologies! Last week saw me babysitting Little Rose (thanks to sister for her kind words in ‘the perfect tableau’ and yes I am a fabulous Aunt), attending the wedding of my best friend (await my next post) and falling ill with a cold (resulting in a general desire not to use my brain). However, with a little encouragement from a good friend, a day of rest, and the soothing sounds of Amy Winehouse I’m ready to discuss all things dine-y and style-y.

Adore Tea in Gold Creek is a place I’ve been dying to visit, so lucky for me I recently went there and avoided the slow death that catches people who don’t have enough flavoured tea in their system. Jokes aside, sipping delicious tea by a cosy fireplace was the perfect way to pass a wintery Canberra afternoon. I sampled the apple and cinnamon, whilst my lovely friend Miss A enjoyed the coconut. They also have a range of sweet treats on the menu which I got a good look at given the waiters kept bringing us food we did not order (I had a plate of waffles waved temptingly under my nose TWICE). Adore Tea features local jazz bands on Sunday afternoons, so this coupled with the delightful tea makes it a place I will definitely be revisiting.

As Rose mentioned I also visited Soju Girl in the same week she did, word of good restaurants in Canberra gets round fast. Collectively we sampled the zucchini flowers, cauliflower flowerets, soft shell crab, tiger prawns, and whole baby snapper with chilli jam. Please note that minus the snapper the rest of these were small plates to share as my friends and I are not training to eat as much as Matt Preston. We really enjoyed all the food, particularly the snapper as the chilli jam was to die for! Soju Girl has an extensive menu and I’m already looking forward to going back there, I’ve got my eye on their wagyu carpaccio. The other thing I loved about Soju Girl was the interior and ambiance of the place. We sat at their communal table where you’re seated on stools at the four corners of a large table across from other diners. It was a fun way to dine but just a tip, it’s not suitable if your party is more than four people. J

Moving onto other topics, one thing you must know about me is that I love my online shopping. And I mean LOVE. I recently needed my clutch collection updated before abovementioned wedding, so onto Google I went with the complex search term ‘online clutches.’ This is how I discovered Style Tread (http://www.styletread.com.au/) and picked up the two goodies you see here. I’ve always been a fan of Olga Berg and I went with these two because I wanted some staples that could be pulled out to go with any outfit. The black retails for $49.95 where I paid $24.90 while the silver retails for $29.95 and I paid $14.90.  When I say bargain, you say yes!

When it comes to the Kardashians style is not something that comes to mind. That being said sometimes inspiration can come from unexpected places, which is why I was surprised when I found I really liked Kourtney K’s outfit above. I used her outfit as inspiration when putting together my ensemble below, which are both pieces I had purchased online a while before and had not thought to combine. The next time you get some fashion inspiration take a look through your wardrobe, because you may just have exactly what you need!

Soldering on at Soju Girl

Hello world!

It's Rose here today, I note the introductions to Lily (aka Sister Rose) have been established with Lily's fab first post on Miss T's bridal shower.

On a similar vein I thought I'd provide a culinary update on a restaurant both Lily and I (coincidentally) visited last week called 'Soju Girl'.

Culinary update

Soju Girl, located in the Melbourne Building in Canberra heralds a new form of dining in our beloved Capital City. Though this city is small, the food scene seems to be expanding at the same rate as my waistline (which is ironic because I feel the reason for my expanding waistline is in part due to the expansion of said food scene, or so I tell myself) with many a innovative food place, ala Asian fusion Soju Girl, popping up as we speak.

The dining at Soju Girl embraces this new vibe of 'sharing plates', with diners given the choice of sharing several small plates and/or large plates. Now as someone who's a weenie bit on the selfish side when it comes to the sharing of food, I found this concept rather alarming (please note, I am generous in every other way and would happily share my organs, clothes, shoes, dvd's, cd's, books etc with all beloveds). So do I share one large plate with my fellow diners (Miss A, Teak and Miss L) and keep a small one for myself ?? Or do we all order one small plate and share?? Or should I just close my eyes and jab at the menu until I reach a combination of dishes both edible and not too pricey.

Anyway, to put a verrry long story short, with the help of a lovely waitress and a few glasses of calming Pellegrino, Miss A, Teak and I finally decided to share one small plate of delicate soft shell crab, a massive plate/bowl of duck and lycee curry, and a chocolate fondant for good measure.

While choosing the plating combinations was a bit tricky, the flavours were not. Each dish was bursting with texture and the flavour combinations were just divine. Duck and lycee, crispy cauliflower and mustard foam (Miss L's dish), crab with a citrus, all very very good. In the end the small and large plate combination worked out perfectly, both for the bank balance and the palette.

So for you Canberrans who haven't tried Soju Girl, I would highly recommend it, and for you non food sharer/standard three course people like me, I encourage you to branch out and try a new style of food, you never know until you try right?

Until next time...Rose. xx

Snappy snapshots

Hello world!

As a prolific over-promiser and under-deliverer I am very excited to post the following. Remember how I promised pictures of my new cushions and strawberry coloured throw? Well here it is (plus some other stuff) a mere six days after my last post. That's gotta be a record for me!

Until next time...Rose. xx

Couture and culinary update

Fantastic Australian designer Leona Edmiston has been doing quality hosiery for a while, and my thighs are so thankful.
